  • Commitment

    • The tendency to take an active role in events.

  • Challenge

    • The perception of change as an opportunity to grow and develop rather than as a threat.

  • Confidence

About Motivation

Motivation is an athletes direction and intensity of effort.

  • The direction of effort refers to whether an individual seeks out, approaches, or is attracted to certain situations.

  • The intensity of effort refers to how much effort a person puts forth in a particular situation.

This is an important aspect to understand and know as motivation can have a direct impact on an athlete's performance and persistence in their sport.

Motivation can be viewed from several vantage points…

  • Achievement motivation

    • A person's efforts to master a task, achieve excellence, overcome obstacles, perform better than others, and take pride in exercising talent.

  • Competitive Stress motivation

    • A disposition to strive for satisfaction when making comparisons with some standard of excellence in the presence of evaluative others.

  • Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation

    • "Intrinsic motivation occurs when we act without any obvious external rewards. We simply enjoy an activity or see it as an opportunity to explore, learn, and actualize our potentials."(Coon & Mitterer, 2010)

    • "Extrinsic motivation refers to our tendency to perform activities for known external rewards, whether they be tangible (e.g., money) or psychological (e.g., praise) in nature."(Brown, Psychology of Motivation, 2007)

These notions are important because they can help athlete's recognize and become more aware of their "WHY" and help them persist through when times get tough.
